Why You Need Both
and Why They’re Not the Same
Let’s talk about two words that get tossed around like confetti: purpose and passion. 🎉
People love to say things like:
“Just follow your passion!”
“Your purpose will find you!”
“If you do what you love, you’ll never work another day in your life!”
Honestly? That last one should come with a warning label.
Let’s break down the difference between purpose and passion, why they’re not interchangeable, and how to start living a life with more of both.
First, What’s the Difference?
Let’s define it simply:
Passion is an intense desire or enthusiasm for something. Think: interests, hobbies, creative urges, or those activities you can lose hours in without even realizing.
Purpose, on the other hand, is deeper. It’s the reason behind what you do. It’s the why. Your purpose is the part of you that wants to matter—to impact others, to create meaning, to leave a mark. It’s not a hobby; it’s a heartbeat.
Still fuzzy? Imagine it like this:
Passion is the car. Purpose is the gasoline.
The car may change (Jeep in your 30s, minivan in your 40s, sporty later on), but the fuel that drives you? That’s your purpose.
Why They’re Not the Same
Passions are what lights you up. Things that excite you. Sometimes they sneak up on you—like suddenly loving pottery after one random Saturday workshop. Passion doesn’t require talent at first. It just needs curiosity. Sometimes passions can turn into purpose.
But purpose?
It’s your personal agreement with what matters. It can be an inner conviction. It might be showing up but you’re not giving it it much attention. It’s less visible, less tangible.
When you’re aligned with purpose, you show up differently. You prioritize what matters. You get gritty when things get tough.
What If You Don’t Know Either?
Great question! You’re not alone. Nothing’s wrong with you. You’re just in discovery.
If you’ve ever felt like you should have this all figured out by now—pause that thought. Sometimes we’re just too close to our own lives to see clearly. You’re in the jar, and you can’t read your own label. But others can.
So, here’s what you can do:
How to Find More Passion
Stay curious. Your brain filters what you decide to look for (hello, Reticular Activating System!).
Reverse engineer it. Make a list of things you don’t like.
Try stuff. Sign up for the class. Say yes to the invite. Step out of your routine.
Dust off old loves. Did you stop painting because life got in the way? Pick it back up!
Ditch the pressure. You don’t need one passion to live a fulfilling life.
Coach Yourself:
What’s one passion you’ve lost touch with—and would love to revisit?
How to Live With More Purpose
Ask better questions. “What do I really want?” is a great place to start. Write it down.
Do a life inventory. Look at your skills, talents, experiences—there are clues there.
Focus outward. Purpose is often tied to the impact you want to have on others. What is that for you?
Stay open. Purpose can shift. It’s not just one job, role, or project. It’s an underlying current running through all you do.
Trust the path. Every obstacle can be a new direction. The mess might actually be the map.
Coach Yourself:
Write out the answers to the questions listed above. And let yourself off the hook as you give it time to marinate.
Why You Need Both
Let’s be honest—daily life can feel like rinse and repeat. When you tap into something you’re passionate about (even if it’s 20 minutes of painting, writing, gardening, whatever), it gives you a hit of natural dopamine.
No need for another iced coffee or doom scroll—you’ve got internal fuel. When you know what truly matters to you (purpose), you stop spinning your wheels on the stuff that doesn’t. You say no more clearly. You set boundaries more confidently.
You prioritize what fills you up instead of what drains you.Together, they make your life have more meaning and more fulfillment
Final Thoughts
Some interesting statistics on Purpose:
When work provides a sense of purpose it is linked with greater happiness, fulfillment, retention, performance and outcomes.
So if you're still figuring it out, good. That means you're in motion. And that’s where the magic happens. You’ve got one precious life. Let’s make it count!
